New to indoor golf or staring at TrackMan numbers wondering what matters? Here’s the simple guide to the 7 metrics that move your score and how to use them during a one-hour session at South Bay Golf Club in Hermosa Beach.
The 7 Numbers That Matter
Club Speed: How fast the club is moving at impact.
Why it matters: More speed = more potential distance.
Goal: Build gradually; prioritize centered contact first.
Ball Speed: How fast the ball leaves the face.
Why it matters: Best single indicator of smash/efficiency.
Quick fix: Solid contact and a square face beat swinging harder.
Smash Factor: (Ball Speed ÷ Club Speed)
Why it matters: Measures quality of strike.
Targets: Driver ≈ 1.45; 7-iron ≈ 1.33 (ranges vary by player/club).
Launch Angle: Initial angle the ball takes off.
Why it matters: Too low = falling out of the sky; too high = ballooning.
Cue: Ball position and dynamic loft set this number.
Spin Rate: How fast the ball is spinning (rpm).
Why it matters: Controls carry, curve, and stopping power.
Driver: Typically 2,000–3,000 rpm for many amateurs.
Club Path: Direction the clubhead is traveling at impact (inside-out vs. outside-in).
Why it matters: Path + face angle = curve (draw/fade).
Cue: Start line ≈ face, curve ≈ path relative to face.
Face Angle: Where the clubface points at impact (open/closed).
Why it matters: Primary driver of start direction and curvature.
