Golf Etiquette 101: Simple Rules Every New Golfer Should Know

Golf is a game built on tradition, respect, and sportsmanship. While there are official rules to follow, there’s also an unspoken etiquette that seasoned golfers follow without a second thought. If you’re new to the game, some of these customs might not be obvious.
That said, times have changed, and some etiquette rules are more relaxed depending on the group you’re with. Here’s a breakdown of the fundamental golf etiquette you should know before hitting the course.
Basic Golf Etiquette & Rules for New Players
1. Keep Up the Pace
Slow play is one of the biggest frustrations in golf. While you don’t have to rush your shots, be mindful of your pace. If you’re taking too long, be ready to pick up your ball or let faster groups play through.
Taking care of the course is a big part of golf etiquette. Be sure to:
Replace divots on the fairway.
Fix ball marks on the greens.
Rake the bunker after hitting your shot.
3. Be Quiet & Respectful
Golf isn’t as rowdy as other sports (except maybe at the Phoenix Open). Try to stay quiet while others are hitting and avoid unnecessary distractions. This is especially important on tee boxes and greens.
4. Stand in the Right Place
Standing directly behind or in front of a golfer can be distracting or even dangerous. Stand to the side and out of their line of sight when they take a shot.
5. Know When to Talk (and When to Stay Quiet)
Golf is social, but timing matters. Avoid talking during someone’s backswing or while they’re focusing on a putt. But between shots? Feel free to chat and enjoy the round!
6. Ready Golf is the New Norm
Traditionally, the player farthest from the hole hits first. But in casual rounds, many groups play “ready golf”—meaning whoever is ready to hit goes first to keep things moving.
7. Respect the Putting Green
Don’t walk in another player’s putting line (the path between their ball and the hole).
Avoid dragging your feet or making deep footprints.
Wait your turn and be mindful of others lining up their putts.
8. Cell Phones & Music—Know Your Group
Golf courses used to have a strict no-phone policy, but times have changed. Some groups enjoy playing music and taking videos, while others prefer silence.
9. Dress Code & Course Rules
Some golf courses have strict dress codes, while others are more relaxed. When in doubt, wear a collared shirt and golf-friendly attire. Also, be sure to check the local rules—some courses allow walking only, while others require carts.
10. Have Fun & Respect Your Group
At the end of the day, golf is meant to be fun. Whether you’re playing competitively or just for fun, respecting your playing partners and enjoying the experience is what matters most.
Etiquette Has Evolved—It Depends on Your Group
While traditional golf etiquette still applies, many rules have loosened depending on the group you’re with. Some players don’t mind casual dress, music, or relaxed putting rules. Others prefer to stick to tradition. The best approach? Communicate with your group and match their style of play.
