Different Types of Grass on a Golf Course

When it comes to golf, the type of grass on a course plays a crucial role in the game. From the fairway to the putting green, each type of grass is selected to provide the best playing conditions. At South Bay Golf Club, we take this seriously—so much so that we use the best golf turf mats in the game to simulate real grass as closely as possible.

Common Types of Grass on Golf Courses

Bermudagrass

One of the most popular grass types, Bermudagrass thrives in warm climates and is known for its durability. It's commonly used on fairways and greens because of its ability to recover quickly from divots and foot traffic. Our indoor golf simulators replicate the firm yet forgiving feel of Bermudagrass for an authentic experience.

Bentgrass

Primarily found in cooler climates, Bentgrass is favored for putting greens due to its smooth, fast surface. This type of grass requires careful maintenance but provides some of the truest rolls in golf.

Zoysiagrass

Zoysiagrass is a versatile, low-maintenance option often found in fairways and tee boxes. It has a soft, dense feel, providing excellent ball support.

This grass is commonly found on championship courses, especially on the West Coast. It grows densely and provides a smooth putting surface, though it can become bumpy as the day progresses.

Ryegrass

Ryegrass is often used for overseeding in cooler months, providing a lush, green playing surface. It’s commonly found on tee boxes and fairways, offering a softer yet resilient feel.

Fescue

Fescue is a staple of links-style courses, growing in rough areas with a wispy, natural look. It can be tough to play from due to its thin, wiry blades. While not commonly used in fairways or greens, understanding how Fescue affects play is important.

Kikuyugrass

Found primarily on West Coast courses, Kikuyugrass is thick and sticky, making it one of the toughest surfaces to play from, especially in the rough.
